I’ve always liked the concept of Cyclops: awesome power with a nagging limitation.  Unable to control his optic blasts without a special visor, Cyclops is one of the best examples of a tragic hero in comics.  At least he was.  Once upon a time, Scott Summers, AKA Cyclops, was one of the most stand up guys in the Main Marvel Universe (MMU).  Then Jean Grey died and he shacked up with the first red head who strolled by.  Then Jean came back and he abandoned his wife and child and ran off with X-Factor.  Then he merged with Apocalypse, unmerged, had a psychic-affair with Emma Frost, and Jean died again.  Now he’s an emotionally repressed masochist who follows along at the end of Emma’s leash.

Ultimate Cyclops is a younger version of Cyclops, before all the horrible mistakes that ruined his character.  He’s not the sharpest crayon in the box, but he’s a good leader.
