In the MMU, Jean Grey was an original X-Man.  Her death was the climax of one of the seminal X-Men story lines.  If that were the end of her story, Jean would pretty much rock and hold a hallowed place along with Gwen Stacy among Marvel’s honored dead. 

Instead, she came back.  She became so powerful that she’s hardly interesting anymore.  She can do whatever she wants to your mind or body.  Then she died again, but not really.  She’s in the ‘White Hot Room’ and may turn up to kick Emma Frost’s fine surgically enhanced butt any time now.

Ultimate Jean Grey is extremely powerful, but not the be-all-end-all that her MMU counterpart has become.  She’s a little bit crazy, imagining green goblins doing the work of her telekinesis.  She became the Phoenix and left the planet forever, which lasted exactly one issue.  She slept with Wolverine early on and clearly wears the pants in her current relationship with Cyclops.
