Ultimates 3 #5 Review

Regular readers know that I’ve been big on Marvel lately, with the exception of Ultimates 3.  Now that the final issue has hit the stands I have to say… it was pretty good.  Not so good that I can overlook the unforgiveable lateness of the book.  Not so good that it redeemed the previous four issues of crap.  But it was pretty good.

Issue #5 felt like an interesting preamble for Ultimatum, the next big Ultimate Universe event.  Magneto is really set up as the big bad, taking down Thor twice with almost no effort.  One of the things that bugged me about the previous issues was the ‘mystery’ of the Black Panther.  It was so obvious that he was Captain America that I felt like they were insulting my intelligence.

This issue softened my criticism of that story line because there was no big reveal, just Cap in a ripped up Panther costume.  It felt like an acknowledgement that there was no mystery, which was good with me.  The previews for Ultimate Captain America Annual #1 show that there is a real Black Panther, which has actually piqued my interest in that book.

All in all, I think that the final issue of Ultimates 3 did all that it could to close this mess and put it behind us.  Onward to Ultimatum!
